The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark rocked with praise yesterday to make Whitney Houston’s journey home the best going-home service they could deliver. Two of the most important women in Whitney Houston’s life, her mother Cissy Houston and her daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, were joined by other mourners at an invitation-only ceremony. From Tyler Perry channeling his inner preacher, to musical tributes by Kim Burrell, BeBe Winans, CeCe Winans, Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, and R. Kelly, the three and a half-hour funeral was heartfelt, genuine, and loving. Whitney Houston’s funeral came down to just one moment: The sound of her own voice.

As the strains of her biggest record, “I Will Always Love You,” filled the New Hope Baptist Church at the end of the service and her silver-and-gold casket was lifted in the air, the weight of the moment was too much for her mother, Cissy Houston, to bear. She was held up by two women, she wailed, “My baby! My baby!” as she was led out the church behind her daughter’s body. A few steps behind her was Bobbi Kristina, also crying uncontrollably as she was comforted by Ray J. It was the most searing scene of the day.
Among family members and friends were many celebrities: Oprah Winfrey, Gayle King, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Brandy, Monica, Forest Whitaker, Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks, Roberta Flack, Kelly Price, Ron Isley, Antonio “L.A.” Reid, M.C. Hammer, Queen Latifah, Missy Elliott, Jaheim, Cicely Tyson, Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon, Vivica A. Fox, Star Jones, Spike Lee, Rev. Al Sharpton, and many others.
