BUSINESS ISH: FORBES HIP HOP'S WEALTHIEST ARTISTS 2016 [LIST + VIDEO]
Dr. Dre shows up at No. 2 with a net worth of $710 million thanks to the sale of Beats By Dre, his work on Straight Outta Compton, and his Southern California real estate portfolio.
Big pimpin’ at No. 3 is Jay Z with $610 million. Jigga has many different revenue streams, but TIDAL might be his biggest. Since buying the streaming platform, he’s tripled its worth.
Birdman rolls up at No. 4 with $110 million, which comes from his Cash Money empire. However, he also dropped $30 million, perhaps due to the label’s turmoil.
Noticeably absent from this year’s “Forbes Five” is 50 Cent. The G-Unit mogul, whose $100 million vitamin water deal previously earned him a spot, filed for bankruptcy last summer, knocking him off the list.
But his loss is Drake’s gain. The VIEWS rapper makes his first appearance on the list, coming in at No. 5. It was a big year for Drizzy, with a net worth of $60 million, due to touring, music, and lucrative deals with Apple, Sprite, and Nike.
“That’s pretty much my objective every year,” Drake previously said of being acknowledged by Forbes. “Other than making good music.”
Forbes claims their annual list is made by
“looking at past earnings, valuing current holdings, leafing through real estate records, and talking to analysts, attorneys, managers, venture capitalists, and some of the moguls themselves.”
In 2015, Diddy was No. 1 as well, followed by Dr. Dre, Jay Z, 50 Cent, and Birdman.
